A unit price is the only way two package sizes can be compared
Comparing headline prices between different quantities compares two things that are not the same, which is why the larger box is not automatically the cheaper option.

Different quantities cannot be compared by their totals
Two products sit next to each other. One costs less and contains less; the other costs more and contains more. Comparing the two prices answers no useful question at all, because they are prices of different amounts of stuff. The only comparison that means anything is cost per unit — per litre, per kilogram, per hundred grams, per sheet.
Most shops now display this, in small print, in units that occasionally differ between neighbouring products so that a straight comparison still requires arithmetic. Where it is shown consistently, it is the single most useful number on the shelf and the one people read last.
The habit is worth building precisely because it is dull. It takes a second, it applies to a large share of routine household spending, and it requires no willpower whatsoever — unlike almost every other approach to spending less.
Bigger is usually cheaper per unit, and not always
The general pattern holds: larger packs tend to have a lower unit price, because packaging and handling costs do not scale with contents. That pattern is a tendency rather than a law, and it is broken often enough to be worth checking. Promotions on small sizes, premium positioning of large ones, and simple pricing quirks all reverse it.
An illustration. Suppose a 500 gram pack costs 3.00 and a 1.2 kilogram pack costs 7.80. The first is 6.00 per kilogram; the second is 6.50. The larger pack is 60% more expensive to buy and worse value per unit, which is not what the shape of it suggests to the eye.
The eye is the problem. Physical size, and the general belief that buying more saves money, both push in the same direction, and the arithmetic that would check them is left undone because the conclusion feels already known.
Buying more converts money into inventory
A bulk purchase is not only a lower unit price. It is also a decision to hold stock, and stock has costs that never appear on the receipt. It occupies space, which a household is paying for. It ties up cash that is then unavailable for anything else until the item is consumed. And it can spoil, expire or go out of favour before it is used.
Waste is the one that quietly destroys the saving. If the larger pack is 15% cheaper per unit and a tenth of it gets thrown away, the advantage has largely gone. If a quarter is thrown away, the bulk purchase cost more than buying small would have, and it felt thriftier the whole time.
The effective unit price is therefore the price divided by the amount actually consumed, not the amount purchased. For anything perishable, or anything whose appeal fades with repetition, those two denominators are meaningfully different.
Having more of something changes how much gets used
There is a behavioural effect worth naming here, without attaching it to any particular finding: people tend to consume more freely from an abundant supply than from a scarce one. A large container encourages a larger pour. A full cupboard encourages replacement rather than finishing.
This does not mean bulk buying is a trap. It means the saving per unit and the change in units consumed have to be considered together, and for anything discretionary the second can eat the first. For genuine staples used at a fixed rate, it rarely does.
The distinction is between things a household consumes at a rate set by need and things it consumes at a rate set by availability. The first category is where bulk buying reliably works.
Where the practice pays and where it does not
Non-perishable items used steadily, with plenty of storage and no cash pressure, are the clean case. The unit price falls, nothing is wasted, and the only cost is having paid earlier than necessary. That last point matters for a household that is short of cash, where buying smaller and more often is entirely defensible even though it costs more per unit.
The awkward cases are perishables, anything faddish, and anything where the household has never actually measured its rate of consumption. There the confident arithmetic of unit pricing sits on top of an unexamined guess about how much will get used.
None of this generalises cleanly across households, and prices, pack sizes and labelling rules differ by country. This describes the arithmetic, not what any particular family should put in a trolley.
Common questions
Is the largest pack always the best value?
Usually but not reliably, and the exceptions are common enough to justify checking. Promotional pricing on smaller sizes, premium formats and inconsistent unit labelling all produce cases where the larger pack costs more per unit. It takes a moment to verify and the assumption is wrong often enough to matter.
How do I account for waste in the comparison?
Divide the price by the amount you expect to actually use rather than the amount in the pack. If you think a fifth of a large pack will be thrown out, the effective unit price is a quarter higher than the shelf label says, which frequently erases the bulk advantage entirely.
Does buying in bulk help if money is tight?
It can work against you. Bulk buying lowers cost per unit but requires more cash now, and a household short of cash may need that money for something else this week. Paying slightly more per unit to keep cash available is a reasonable trade rather than a failure of discipline.
